See linked document for full description of this hike. Hike Overview: The hike follows the Forest Service 4WD Road #122 all the way for the first 2.5 miles to the first pond of a string of Lily Ponds. We will take a short trail here to the north to another of the Lily Ponds, return to the first pond, and then continue by trail to the Colorado Trail where we will hike east through the golden tunnel of aspen to the two highest of the Lily Ponds and an outstanding spot for lunch. The trail climbs continuously via mostly moderate slopes through primarily forested terrain with stunning large aspen groves and a number of beautiful viewpoints to the east toward the Mosquito Range, south across the Twin Lakes, and west to Mt. Elbert with groves of color all around (if the color cooperates this year). A couple of the Lily Ponds have very nice active beaver dens and beautifully engineered beaver dams. After visiting the upper Lily Ponds, we will return to the vehicles via trail back to the first pond visited and see yet additional views and, finally, walk back on FS #122 through the aspen groves to the vehicles.
